Kolam is a folk art form that was originally designed to feed the insects and particularly ants in respect of their contribution in keeping Earth fertile. Placed in front of a house entrance, each household was given the responsibility to feed the insects.

As time passed it branched out to elaborate designs using intricate symbols that depicted a particular event or celebration. In Malaysia, Indians have been decorating the entrance of their homes, wedding halls and temples from the time early immigrants from India came to reside in Malaysia. Though the practice of feeding the insects daily gradually faded, you will still see the Kolam being placed for important occasions.

There are two distinctive styles, one is Kolam, used by the South Indians and the other is Rangoli, done by the North Indians.

This particular Kolam which is a combination of the above two is designed specially for this occasion, keeping the 1Malaysia theme in mind.

This Kolam breaks away from the conventional design to a more contemporary one. Though it is visualised to represent the current time and occasion, we have carefully maintained the originality of the Kolam. The colorful, decorative style and clear partitions which are the basic fundaments of Kolam design, is preserved to ascertain tradition.

This country is famous for its hills and mountains. The name "Malaysia" came from Malaya, originating from a tamil word "Mallai" which literally means hill. Three hills are shown in the Kolam, the Red representing the Chinese, the Green representing the Malays and the Orange in the centre representing the Indians. The Indian hill is placed in the centre to signify the status of the Indians and their role as a balance in this country.

There are nine figures just below the hills. They represent the nine sound chakras which create a harmonious biorhythmic balance which is much needed during this time of global uncertainty.

The tree trunk in the centre represents the firm foundation of our faith that is keeping this country in stability.

The whole tree is a symbolic representation of the 1Malaysia Tree that is planted on this land by our Prime Minister. The seed below signifies his idea and the basic foundation that is now spreading its roots and keeping the Tree of Unity in harmony.

Both the sun and the moon signify the compromise and tolerance that is keeping this Land of Hope together in solidarity.

The many ants that are red and black are representations of the citizens of this land. Their presence on the Kolam without any orderly manner is to signify the freedom that is experienced on this land.

The centre white and red strap are part of the colours of our national flag.

The little container and the flow of whitish milk into it, is to remind Malaysian Indians of their entry into the estates in the beginning of time.

Colored rice, spice and herbs are used to symbolize a nature- friendly environment. An aromatic ambience is further created with pandan leaves to appease the audience.

The little clay earthenware that is normally lit with oil wicks is filled with colored rice to show our concern over global warming.

Kathiravan Subramaniam

Kathiravan Subramaniam is a technical manager by profession, with 12 years of experience in the field. A graduate, Kathiravan completed his Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (B.Eng(Hons)) from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Although engineering is a large part of his life, his passion for art has been a continuous one. From young, he has always admired and appreciated all art forms, the translation of inner feelings into the many kinds of arts, from music, dance and to visual art. When he paints, he achieves a contentment of being connected to the nature. He says, `I like the feeling of looking at the process of how an image is born in front of me; fill the canvas, evolve, reach its maturity and detach from me to become independent.’ As the assistant secretary of the club, Kathir says that the club would be a good opportunity to like-minded people to share experiences with other members, which in return boosts the artistic growth in them. He also feels that art is a very important medium and should be taken seriously by everyone to activate the faculty of imagination and creativity as it helps one to achieve a balance in life.

Kelvin

The Project Co-ordinator of the club, Kelvin is an administration assistant by profession with three years of experience in the field with a Diploma in IT in his hands. Kelvin started drawing and painting at the tender age of 11.What started as a childhood interest and hobby has now become an exploring patch for Kelvin. To him, the formation of the club is important as it gives him a path to expand his knowledge in the field. It also gives the members a chance to meet new people and share experiences among themselves and participate in many different activities conducted by the club. Kelvin feels that the club would be a great networking link to many others where knowledge and hands on experience are sure benefits.

With more than eight years of experience in the press industry and a year in the advertising industry, Pariselvam is currently working as a full time graphic designer with the Malay Mail, a local leading daily. A person who often experiments and tries out new things, Pari has been actively exploring art, making full use of his graphic capabilities in art, trying to create a distinctive style of his own and broaden his knowledge on art. To him, art is a very important channel that allows him to express himself fully. He feels that the formation of the art club is essential as it would be a good contributing body to the society.

As discussed on 31st August 2009, a painting session themed 'Caves on Canvas' will be held at Batu Caves at 8 am on Saturday, 5th September 2009. The canvas (discussed size: 2 ft x 3ft) will be sponsored. Members are required to bring the following items.

6) Plastic bag (to store wet materials after use)

International auction houses that had been mainly showing “Western Art” are now slowly shifting their focus to Asia. The art scene in Indonesia, India and China has proven its worth and has become prime movers of big auction houses. Malaysian Art which was untapped by the International Art scene is now gradually finding its place overseas and have experienced a remarkable facelift, bringing about more full time painters who are now part of an increasingly active art market.

Art is a field of prospects and good artworks are now selling at comfortable prices. No doubt, art has come to stay with us and it is high time that it is treated with the respect and integrity that it demands! ‘Caves on Canvas’, an art exhibition was conceived with these aims in mind.

‘Caves On Canvas’ is the maiden project of the newly formed Symbols Art Club. In the month of August, an outdoor painting session saw a group of 16 artists setting their easel and painting Batu Caves. Though it was a casual field trip, the response from the tourists and locals gave an idea to exhibit and display the artworks to public.

The Chairman of Batu Caves Devasthanam was more than happy and supported the idea. A suitable place was provided and a number of canvases were sponsored to aid the artists.

In this exhibition, each artist would be showcasing three canvases. One piece would depict Batu Caves, each in their own unique and distinctive style. Two other works are derived from personal collection of works; where different modes of expressions are portrayed, expanding the versatility of each artist. Every artwork displayed holds its own aesthetic value as all these artists are exposed to different environment and ideologies.

Malliga was an art teacher and is currently conducting art training for Tamil school teachers under a foundation. Jayshree is a fulltime artist who has worked with National Art Gallery on a few occasions.

Rohini, an NGO executive is a very serious abstract painter. Suseela, a gynecologist is very passionate about art and apart from her clinic life, she is an artist at heart. This is the second exhibition for both these artists. Kalawathi, a Singaporean currently residing here has had her exhibitions in Dubai and is a glass painter.

Sharmini, an accountant has been painting since schooldays and has a strong sense of shapes and color. Ramani has worked as a hoarding artist and is also a make-up artist.

Kathiravan is an engineer by profession. He is a good portraitist and dabbles comfortably in oil. Mona, a 21 year old is a full time artist and recently exhibited with Matahati.

Mano is a graphic designer and has been in the field for many years and has a strong sense in line works. Vasu, a Penangnite is currently working on a group exhibition in Penang based on the "Buah Palah" issue.

Kelvin is a young artist who is good in charcoals and is also good in perspective. Pari is a graphic designer who is a good caricaturist and is into Pop Art. Rajasegaran is a martial arts master and a good illustrator and portraitist, who has a unique style of painting figurative.

Sharon is an alternative therapist and has an eye for nature and it is a joy to see her drawings of flora. Santhi, a management trainer took leave from job and travelled Europe for six months to visit art galleries and is a very passionate artist.

For many years, I searched for the real me. I wanted a true friend and something or someone that I truly belonged to. However, I was always left out, lost and hurt in the end. The search never did me any good. All I received were criticism and harsh treatment. But I did not realise that my true love was residing within me all along. I found a strange calmness and peace through my paintings. Though they do not speak to me, they gave me an indescribable contentment and joy. There were times when I neglected everything and even dropped this passion of mine. However, it kept returning back to me. I realised that art is my true love and soulmate. I finally found myself.

I wonder in amazement as I watch these tiny little insects build their way towards a new home. So united and co-operative they are, that it makes me wonder why don’t the superior human beings hold this trait?

Differences exist even between family members. Parents don’t understand their children and vice versa, neighbours don’t interact with each other and this selfishness is slowly spreading through our community. If only we had the love and the unity of the ants, wouldn’t the world be a better place?

When it is midnight, everything seems to fall right into place. The wind blows gentle breezes and the lucent moon shines radiantly. The plants and the animals, or perhaps the ancient souls in disguise, perform their little dance in bliss, in synch with the serenity and calmness of the night. How can one not appreciate the beauty of midnight? Could this have been the same charming midnight that has been the inspiration of the creative hearts over the centuries?

For this painting I used a snake (a type of desperate and selfish intelligence) formed in a stressful mind (which is in a shape of a flower bud) to represent the drastic decisions the mind is making out of fear of not being able to obtain its needs. The bee is there to remind the mind that even if it is able to blossom like a flower after making all the necessary decisions and actions, the bee will suck the nectar of the flower away and leave the flower to die. A natural order of mother nature. At the end it was just a journey for the mind and never a win - win situation for the intelligent snake.

We seek god for many reasons and in many places. I see the giant light that welcomes everyone at the entrance of the caves as a beacon of hope.It might not be bright and shinny, it might not even be lit, yet it symbolizes light that dispels darkness. The foliage on the rock surface shows growth despite the rough surroundings.To me it is all about hope, faith and growth.

This is a picture of the many domes on the shrines around Batu Caves. It sits firmly and proudly and yet veils the believer or the devotee, who visits this shrine to acquaint himself with what he senses as a sacred reality.

The Singing Bowl

This brass bowl and the wooden handle, also called the singing bowl, is used for "cleansing" rituals believed to ward off negative energy in a home or premise. Man has always been influenced by various spiritual beliefs that he seeks solace through such beliefs when he feels that the course of life seems to have failed him. The shadow behind the bowl depicts that man. The subtle images on the upright handle symbolize peace, beauty and security man seeks in life.

I derived great joy watching this painting come alive. My primary message was to share my belief in the power of each new day. Every day starts anew when the sun's first rays fall upon the earth and its beings. The birds never greet a day with a sad melody and the flowers always look up and open their petals to embrace the sun. Make the most of each day and celebrate all that you are, like the sun, the birds and the flowers!

(During my recent visit to South India, I met this interesting old lady who built a temple based on an omen she received, spending the last days of her life serving the temple. Her story captivated me and I decided to paint a portrait of her.)

The grandness of the caves with its magnificent temples and statues always become the focus of our attention. We often don’t notice the small structures – like the tiny Kalasams set against the beautiful limestone backdrop with pigeons visiting daily, saying a little prayer.

Being a Hindu, visiting Batu Caves is mainly for prayers. The beauty of the surroundings always overlooked – with pigeons & monkeys, trees & shrubs, the dripping of rain water from the cave structure, the silence of the cool air in the cave, and the majestic limestone formation made-up of a spectrum of colors like an artist’s palette. Watching a child guided up the glorious stairs, amidst all the natural elements surrounding him, only did I see Batu Caves come alive like a mystical painting.

Malliga started painting at the tender age of five, inspired by her late father, Mr. P. Ramasamy who was a portrait artist. And today at the age of 59, she does not allow her age be a factor or stop her passion for art. A person who had been very active in art field, Malliga was a member of Perak Art Club from 1979 to 1980. She was also the Ketua Panitia Pendidikan Seni from 1993 to 1994. In 2005, she retired as a curriculum officer. However, that did not stop her involvement in art. She continued attending various courses such as batik painting, porcelain painting, chinese brush painting and oil painting. Her current stop is at Symbols House of Natural Art, where she is actively learning acrylic painting from Artist Jeganathan since November 2006. Malliga has also exhibited oil paintings at Artist Siah's studio and acrylic paintings in a group exhibition at Symbols Gallery. Currently, she teaches art and craft to pre-school teachers of MCEF foundation. She also conducts free classes for privileged students at Batu Caves.

As the President and one of the founders of Symbols Art Club, Malliga feels that the formation of the club is essential as it helps to encourage and instill interest in upcoming Indian artists. As there are no clubs for Indian artists, she feels that this club would be a great connecting point for artists, allowing them to get together and share ideas. She further adds that the club allows the members to acquire knowledge and participate in various activities, such as outdoor painting sessions and visits to art galleries.

Looking ahead, Malliga intends to recruit more members and create awareness among the members about the importance of contemporary Indian Art as well as developing creativity and aesthetic values. She also hopes that Symbols Art Club will hold its name as one of the earliest Indian Art Club formed in the country.

Sharmini Thangarajah

Sharmini Thangarajah is a full time accountant with more than 12 years of experience in the field. With these qualifications, the club could not have found a better treasurer. Having the flair and interest for art since school days, Sharmini decided to take her interest further and pursue art by joining art classes at Symbols Gallery two years ago. Sharmini sees the club as a meeting point of people with same interest, where experienced artists provide guidance. She also feels that art lovers should allocate time for art, at least once a week, to develop their passion in art. Her advice to art lovers: “Please don’t give up and don’t let your talent go to waste.”

An ardent art lover since she was 14, Helena has always wanted to explore painting and the fine arts. Although she is a company manager by profession, she believes that she holds a huge commitment and responsibility towards art. Her aim was realised when she was appointed as the secretary of Symbols Art Club. Helena believes that the club will be a good avenue in providing exposure to many upcoming artists and also in providing proper guidelines to art lovers. She urges youngsters to join the club as it would not only provide knowledge but also prevent them from threading towards the wrong direction.

ILHAM is a yearly event created and organized by Pelita Hati House of Art. It’s main objective-to provoke the imagination of the general public and in particular art enthusiasts into the world of sculptures. ILHAM gathers Malaysian sculptors into one solid exhibition of sculptures and also wall relief.

Mohana

After leaving school, when most youth would opt for a college education, Mohana was very much adamant to be an artist.

She completed her two years in Symbols House of Natural Art doing "Gurukulam", an ancient system of learning, where she was an apprentice to the artist, Jeganathan.

She says, "The system allowed me to acquire in depth the knowledge of fine arts and gave me the freedom to experiment with ideas an concepts."

Her first piece is a figurative painting where she did a portrait of herself. For the second painting, 'Journey to My Dreams', she used symbolism to represent significant people around her while she paves her way towards her dreams.

Suseela

A doctor by profession, Suseela Thevi discovered art as an avenue to help her relax.

Her first painting is a portrait of her mother which is done in tribute to her dedication towards the family.

She also showcases her talent in a series of nine paintings depicting the epic Dasavatharam from a medical perspective.

"Looking into the uterus" she says, uses the idea of portraying the characters of the epic from a microscopic view.

Looking forward, she intends to continue painting seriously so as to understand the effects of healing through art.

Rohini

A Communications Executive with a NGO, Rohini's first passion has always been art as she has been painting and drawing since the tender age of 13. She eventually found an art teacher to provide her with the right guidance.

One of her painting in this show is a portrait of her dad. Producing this painting allowed her to emotionally connect with him. The other painting depicts her sister playing the piano.

She believes that there is a long learning road ahead and this exhibition is just her attempt at taking small baby steps ahead; and so as to fulfilling her dream of taking art as a primary career someday.

As an art teacher, Malliga was fortunate to have the support and encouragement of her late father, a teacher passionate about drawing portraits from young.

Her passion to discover new realms in art had taken her from water colour to chinese brush painting.

For this exhibition, she is working with acrylic. She loves painting sceneries especially of natural surroundings and one of her works on exhibition is a depiction of still life using a saree and a milk vessel.

It has symbolic significance to herself and her spouse.

Teaching runs in her blood and she is currently teaching art to underprivileged children for free in Batu Caves.

Jayashree

Jayashree studied Architectural Draftmanship after leaving school.

In 2003, she joined as a manager for Symbols House of Natural Art. She was involved in the activities of the gallery; right from administration, sales and marketing to assisting the artist, Jeganathan in his paintings.

She learned extensively, through "Gurukulam" an ancient art of learning. In one of her three paintings, 'Elements' she used corals to represent life. Her concepts are environmentally motivated.

As she says, "The corals are really like any other forest, a habitat for millions of species. Corals take hundreds of years to form but are easily destroyed."

When asked about her future plans, she answered, "I will leave that to the moment."

Vasu

For 15 years, Vasu dedicated his mind and time for the banking industry while his heart silently longed for the desire of being an artist. He spends his free time meeting artists and learning their experiences. Allocating his time for work and art, he now has taken the first step of attaining his dream by partaking in this exhibition.

He displays three paintings. The first is an oil on canvas depicting a boy monk. The second and third are portrait paintings; one being his self portrait and the other of a friend, Jeganathan.

He choose to do a portrait of himself as he considered the subject to be a challenge.

Vasu intends to pursue the art field as his carer path in the long run.

Siva

An accountant by profession, Siva literally stopped dabbling in art after he lost his mother when he was very young. It was after 14 years that he took to art again. He attended art classes and soon was spending time between lunch, drawing trees and everything natural.

While looking for a theme for this exhibition he chanced upon the meaning of the word "bark" in the Hindu scriptures. It was another name of Shiva. That drove him to do many charcoal sketches and a handful were selected for this show.

He says, "People fail to see what a tree can offer. I want to show them of the beauty that is, even in barks."

Three works are exhibited in this exhibition and it is all about barks! When asked whether he would continue with this series, he says "I want to be spontaneous, so I will wait for the next inspiration."

Ghanamoney

While others may be contented to take life easy, Ghanamoney has taken up the challenge of fulfilling a lifelong dream of being an artist. As a child, he was fascinated by a neighbour's skill in pencil drawing and enjoyed doing his own sketches and water colours.

Coming from a traditional family of barbers, it was no easy task to convince his conservative family otherwise.

After so many years, he decided to pursue his passion for painting and enrolled in an art class.

His long-lost passion has now manifested in portraits especially those of family and friends.
